Starting School

This page gives parents information on admission procedures at Ton Yr Ywen.

Admission to school is handled by Cardiff Council. There is lots of information about the whole admission process on their website including the on-line application form. Follow the link above for more information.

New parents are welcome to visit the school to find out more about Ton Yr Ywen. We will be pleased to show you around and answer your questions. If you want a place at the school you need to apply directly to the Council using the on-line application form:

We do not keep a waiting list and the allocation of places is NOT on 'a first come, first served' basis. The Council website above explains how places are allocated. Demand for places is often high. Priority is given to children who live in the catchment area. It is essential that parents applying for a place complete their application forms by the proper closing date.

Children can start Nursery in the term after their 3rd birthday (September, January or April). Nursery places are on a part time basis (am or pm). We try to accommodate parents wishes for a morning or afternoon place but this is not always possible. There are 80 places available in the Nursery. Parents of children accepted into Nursery are invited to an open evening held towards the end of the Summer term.

Children can start Reception in the September after their 4th birthday. There are 60 places available in Reception. Parents of children accepted into Reception are invited to an open evening held in late June/early July. We provide parents with a helpful 'Starting School' booklet. You can find a copy at the bottom of this page.

If your application for a Reception place at Ton Yr Ywen is unsuccessful you can appeal to the independent Statutory Appeal Panel. They have the power to overturn the Council's decision if the Council have not applied admissions rules correctly.
